This is preferable 1: Absent policy, debate becomes pointless criticizing that can’t do anything to change problems in the squo. PG: (Niko Karetnyi) These futile attempts to philosophize one’s way into political relevance are a symptom of what AND everywhere and nowhere, as evanescent and insistent as a resourceful spook."10 2: Implementation allows for a more exact debate allowing the different philosophies and examples to be contextualized and therefore evaluated, otherwise, debate just becomes example wars or two different philosophies with no context to evaluate them. While preparing for this tournament, I realized how funny it was that I was coming up with reasons for developing countries to prioritize the protection of the environment, while my home town of Salt Lake City has the worst air quality in the nation. The other week, I thought the front page of the Salt Lake Tribune showed the post apocalyptic planet Earth from the movie WallE, when it was actually showing the smog and pollution my city is notorious for. It is not surprising that the air I breathe is so polluted. Salt Lake is home to a Chevron oil refinery, dozens of salt companies on the Great Salt Lake, and the Bingham Canyon copper mine. Resources are extracted daily around Salt Lake, and it shows in our atmosphere. My advocacy for this round is that people in developed countries should prioritize environmental protection over resource extraction when the two are in conflict. After all, the resolution says developing countries, not developed. However, upon closer examination, the value decisions made by developing countries in regards to the environment closely mirror those in developed countries. If a country had a choice between protecting the environment and developing the economy, what difference does it make if that country is arbitrarily classified as "developed" or "developing", "rich" or "poor". The duty to protect the environment is universal. Therefore, by having a debate about the value of the environment in developed countries, we are having the same debate that we would have if we were debating about the same issues in developing countries. My advocacy is completely topical: I make a suggestion concerning the value of resource extraction v. environmental protection. I may not be resolutional, but this does not prevent us from having a value debate, which is the crux of the activity. "Just go out for a breath of air, And you’ll be ready for medicare. Thus, it is not the scope of our debate to decide the kinds of sacrifices developing countries ought to make when making environmental policy. Instead, we should focus on the environmental degradation that we are responsible for us, and turn that into a value decision. When we can come up with a decision that we are comfortable living with, then we can apply that value to other countries. This way, we don’t gamble the destruction of people in developing countries in order to win a "risk of an econ impact". This is the best way to initiate the value debate.
