We talk about several aspects of the topic like it doesn’t matter. Right now, we treat debate as a forum where strategic choices are the crux of success. We forego the possibility that it can act as a forum for people whose voices are completely limited in society. Debate is the only place people like us have a voice. Instead of exchanging stories of suffering to simply win a ballot, we must recognize that there is value in dialogue and individual stories. Coming from a developing country and being a part of the caste system, I was faced with a cycle of discrimination I could not avoid. I became the center of jokes thrown around about untouchables. If I were to be hurt about something of that sort, I would just be told to “get over it”. There is no voice for people like myself in the status quo society. Debate is the only place where we have a free voice, and it is overshadowed by strategic tools employed by debaters just to win a ballot and further their goal of winning a shiny trophy or being well known in a debate community. The voices and stories of individuals have power, but only when we are recognized.
